Neutral or Stability?

Neutral shoes let the foot move freely and suit most runners. Stability shoes add features that limit the foot rolling inward (overpronation), such as Brooks GuideRails or the ASICS 4D Guidance System.

Modern stability shoes are subtle. If you've had sh in or knee discomfort in neutral shoes, a stability model is worth trying; otherwise start neutral.

How Much Cushioning?

Moderate cushioning (Brooks Ghost, Saucony Ride, Nike Pegasus) balances comfort and responsiveness for daily runs. Maximum cushioning (HOKA Bondi, ASICS Gel-Nimbus) prioritizes comfort on long and recovery runs but adds weight.

Foam type affects feel: EVA foams are durable and affordable, while newer supercritical and nitrogen-infused foams feel lighter and bouncier.

Heel-to-Toe Drop

Drop is the height difference between heel and forefoot. Traditional trainers sit at 10 to 12mm (Brooks Ghost and Adrenaline); many newer shoes use 5 to 8mm (HOKA Bondi, ASICS Novablast).

Lower drops load the calves and Achilles more. If you switch from a high-drop to a low-drop shoe, rotate them and build up gradually.

Getting the Fit Right

• Leave about a thumb's width between your longest toe and the shoe's end.
• Try shoes in the afternoon — when feet are slightly larger.
• Wear the socks you run in.
• Choose wide widths if the forefoot feels tight; Brooks, HOKA, ASICS and Saucony offer them on many models.

Durability and Replacement

Most running shoes last roughly 300 to 500 miles. Signs of a worn shoe include a midsole that no longer rebounds, creases in the foam, worn-through outsole rubber and new aches after runs.

Rotating two pairs lets foam recover between runs and spreads wear. Avoid drying shoes on heaters, which can damage glues and foam.

Common Mistakes

• Buying for looks or brand rather than fit.
• Choosing a racing shoe as a daily trainer.
• Switching to a much lower drop overnight.
• Running in shoes long past their useful life.
