      FAQ

      Common questions

Why does my Instant Pot show 'burn' before reaching pressure?

The burn indicator triggers when the temperature at the base of the inner pot rises above a threshold without adequate liquid to distribute heat. Causes: thick sauce or tomato-based liquid with insufficient th in liquid underneath, the sauce scorches on the base before pressure is reached. Fix: add 1 cup of water or broth to the bottom of the pot before adding thick sauce. For recipes with dairy (milk, cream): add dairy after pressure cooking, not before, dairy scorches under pressure. Deglaze the pot thoroughly after sauteing (add liquid and scrape up any stuck bits) before pressure cooking, stuck browned bits burn during pressurization.

The Instant Pot float valve rose but steam is leaking from the lid, is this normal?

A small amount of steam from the pressure release valve during the initial pressurization phase is normal on most Instant Pot models. Once the float valve has risen and the cooker is fully pressurized: no steam should escape from the lid seam or float valve. Steam from the lid seam (between lid and pot): indicates a failed sealing ring. Steam from the float valve area: indicates a missing or damaged float valve silicone cap. Both require inspection and part replacement. Continuous steam from the pressure release valve: the valve handle is not fully in the Sealing position.

How do I know when a stovetop pressure cooker has reached pressure?

Jiggle-top valve (Presto, Mirro): the rocker weight begins to rock and release small puffs of steam at a steady rhythm. This indicates full pressure. Reduce heat to mainta in the jiggling without excessive steam loss. Modern flat valve (Fissler, Kuhn Rikon): a pressure indicator rod or colored ring rises in the lid handle, indicating the pressure level reached. Start the cook timer when the indicator shows full pressure. Beg in timing only from the moment of full pressure, time before this is pressurization time, not cooking time.
