How to fix it
Work through these in order, the most common causes come first.
Fix 1: Tighten the Desk Clamp
The desk clamp is the foundation of the entire arm.
A loose clamp allows the entire arm assembly to rock, which amplifies into visible screen movement.
Find the clamp tightening mechanism (usually a large bolt under the desk or a padded thumbscrew through the clamp).
Tighten until the clamp does not move when you push the arm sideways with moderate force.
Over-tightening can damage soft desk materials, apply firm pressure, then confirm the arm is solid before pushing further.
Fix 2: Increase the Arm Joint Tension
Every arm joint has an adjustable tension.
A joint set too loose allows the arm to flex in response to vibrations.
Use the included hex key to find the tension adjustment screw on each joint.
For Ergotron arms: the tension screws are recessed in the joint housing.
Increasing tension requires turning the screw clockwise, make small adjustments (1/4 turn) and test, as over-tightening makes the arm stiff to adjust.
Fix 3: Add a Grommet Mount
If you use a desk clamp and the desk surface is thin, hollow, or particularly vibration-prone, switching to a grommet mount (through a hole in the desk) provides a more rigid connection.
A grommet mount anchors the arm to the desk structure rather than just clamping to the edge.
Most monitor arms support both clamp and grommet mounting.
Drilling a grommet hole (typically 25mm diameter) is permanent but dramatically reduces vibration transmission.
Fix 4: Move the Monitor Closer
Arm wobble is a leverage problem.
A monitor positioned at maximum arm extension has more leverage to amplify small vibrations than a monitor positioned close to the desk.
Move the monitor toward the desk by retracting the arm extension.
For most users, a monitor 8-12 inches from the desk edge provides adequate distance without maximum arm leverage.
Fix 5: Replace a Budget Gas-Spring Arm
Some very inexpensive gas-spring arms lack the resistance to rema in stable under typing vibration regardless of adjustment.
If tightening all joints and the clamp does not resolve the wobble, the arm design itself may be insufficient.
Ergotron-design arms (four-point independent tension) are more resistant to vibration-induced wobble than single gas-cylinder designs.
The Ergotron LX is the standard recommendation for typing-sensitive setups.

FAQ
Common questions
Why does my monitor arm wobble when I type?
The most common causes are: the desk clamp is not tight enough, the arm's joint tension is set too low, the desk surface itself vibrates, or the arm design has too much horizontal reach which amplifies small vibrations. Ergotron and similar arms with four-point tension adjustment typically wobble less than gas-spring arms because every joint has independent tension control.
Does monitor arm wobble get worse over time?
Spring-loaded arms lose spring tension over months of use. Gas spring arms can develop slower gas leaks over years. A monitor arm that was stable at purchase may wobble 12-18 months later due to reduced spring tension, this is normal wear and the tension can be readjusted with the included hex key.
Is monitor arm wobble bad for the monitor?
Mild vibration from typing is generally not harmful to the monitor itself. Severe shaking that causes visible screen movement repeatedly stresses the VESA mount points and the monitor's internal cable connections. If the wobble is severe enough to distort the image during typing, address it, prolonged stress on the mount points can loosen the VESA bracket over time.
