Step 1: Assemble the Stand

Extend the tripod legs fully and lock the center column.

For desk use, extend the stand to place the ring at eye level when seated.

For full-body or standing use, extend to at least 5 feet height.

Step 2: Mount the Ring on the Stand

Thread the ring mounting bracket onto the center column of the stand.

Most ring lights use a standard 5/8-inch stud mount.

Tighten the locking collar to secure the ring.

Step 3: Position Behind the Camera

Place the stand so the ring is directly behind the camera.

For monitor webcams, position the stand so the camera is near the center of the ring opening.

For phone camera setups, mount the phone holder in the center of the ring.

The ring should be at or slightly above eye level, not above the camera, not below.

The ideal position is with the ring centered on your face in the camera preview.

Step 4: Set Color Temperature

Start at a neutral setting (5000K for daytime, 4000K for evening).

Turn on the ring and look at your camera preview, adjust color temperature until the sk in tone looks natural against the room lighting.

If your room has warm incandescent light: set the ring to a warmer temperature (3500-4000K) so the ring light matches the room and does not appear as a cold spotlight.

Step 5: Adjust Brightness

Start at full brightness and reduce until the exposure looks natural in the camera preview.

A ring light that is too bright overexposes the face and washes out sk in tones.

Aim for the face to be evenly lit, not glowing.

        FAQ

        Common questions

Where should I put my ring light for video calls?

Position the ring light directly behind your camera, at the same height as the camera. The camera should be in the center of the ring, or as close to center as the mounting allows. This creates even frontal fill light with no directional shadows.

How far should a ring light be from my face?

Optimal ring light distance is 2-4 feet from the face. Closer than 2 feet can create overexposure and visible hotspots. Beyond 4 feet, light intensity falls off and shadow fill becomes less effective. For webcam video calls w here the camera is on the monitor, 2-3 feet is the standard setup distance.

Should I turn off room lights when using a ring light?

Ring lights work best as a supplement to ambient room light, not a replacement for it. Turning off all room lights creates harsh contrast between the lit face and the dark background, which looks unnatural on video. Mainta in some background lighting. Aim for the ring light to be roughly twice as bright as the ambient room light, not the sole light source.
